Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints have reached the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history. The Saints managed to eke out a 31-28 win over the Vikings and have now punched a ticket to Miami to play the Colts in Super Bowl XLIV. To read a quick recap about tonight’s game, click the jump.

Sunday’s Saints vs. Vikings matchup was very eventful with tons of twists and turns. While I do think the Saints are a worthy Super Bowl team, I believe it was the Vikings who lost this game, more so than the Saints won it. The game was close throughout but the difference was that the Vikings committed an uncharacteristic 5 turnovers. Even with their turnover woes, The Vikes had ample opportunities to capitalize throughout the game, especially at the end of regulation but were unable to execute down the stretch. Brett Favre threw an interception with under 20 seconds remaining in regulation while the Vikings were in field goal range. The Saints won the toss in overtime and never looked back as they marched down the field and kicked a field goal to win. Kudos to the Saints defense for knocking Favre on his ass all game and making the Iron Man himself look vulnerable. After the beating Favre took tonight, it makes some wonder how much more abuse the 40-year-old can take? Will he retire or come back? Cue the Brett Favre soap opera.

This win also has huge implications for the city of New Orleans.  A little over four years ago, the Louisiana Superdome was used as a “shelter of last resort” for those devastated by Hurricane Katrina and today 73,000+ fans celebrated as their hometown team won the NFC Championship, setting up what should be a great showdown in Super Bowl XLIV. Congrats to the Saints.
