Did Red Bull literally give Felix Baumgartner wings? Professional base jumper and skydiver Felix Baumgartner is attempting to become the first man to break the speed of sound with his body by jumping out of a balloon at 120,000 feet! Red Bull Stratos, the name of the jump that will occur somewhere in North America in late 2010 is currently being filmed for a documentary by the BBC.  To read details about this particular jump and see other wild footage of Baumgartner, click more.

How it will go down:

  • He will be placed in a small space capsule and lifted by a helium-filled balloon
  • Once he hits 120,000 feet the ground control will give him the go ahead to jump
  • The capsule and his suit will both be equipped with video
  • After 35 seconds, he will hit speeds that should break the sound barrier and he should be falling at speeds faster than an airplane can fly.
  • Once he hits 5,000 feet, he will pull the parachute and cruise to land.
  • Baumgartner is attempting to break Joseph Kittinger’s record of 102,000 feet set in 1960. Footage of Kittinger’s jump is the opening to the Boards of Canada’s “Dayvan Cowboy” music video.

Felix Baumgartner jumps off “Christ the Redeemer” in Rio de Janiero.

Baumgartner is best known for the being the first person to skydive across the English Channel.
